Women get a voice in the US presidential debate

The three New Jersey teenagers who passionately campaigned to have a female moderate a US presidential debate have had their wish granted.

CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley will become the first woman in 20 years to moderate a US presidential debate since ABC’s Carole Simpson in 1992.

Crowley, who anchors CNN’s political program State of the Union with Candy Crowley, will question US President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney during the second presidential debate on 16 October, before the general election on 6 November.

With a recent push amongst US women’s groups for a female moderator, it is argued that having a woman moderate the debate will give voice to issues of concern to women, such as inequality in the workplace and the impact of the economy on women and families.

Joining CNN from NBC News in 1987, Crowley served as a congressional correspondent prior to her current role as chief political correspondent.
