Tunisian women rise up against charter

Women in Tunisia are fighting against a proposed article in the nation’s new constitution, which is believed, by many, to be an Islamist ploy to reverse the principle of gender equality.

Activists say the proposed article consists of language that will compromise women’s rights under the Personal Status Code, established in 1956 by Tunisia’s first president, which abolished polygamy and the practice of repudiation (where husbands could divorce their wives by saying so three times).
