Julia Gillard discusses confronting misogyny and sexism in politics with the BBC

“Women can take it” – this is the message that Julia Gillard wants the world to know.

She has told BBC News this week that the timely release of My Story, her political memoir of her three years as Australian Prime Minister, carries an important message for women that: “if they want a career in politics they shouldn’t hold back”.

In this video, Gillard reflects on gender being a much broader issue than one that’s solely constrained to Australian politics, and offers a warning that sexism will show up during the US presidential campaign.

Gillard also offers some advice to women experiencing misogyny in politics: “On gender issues it’s best to confront them front-up. If there is any differential treatment to deal with, do it in the early days rather than let it build”.
