Sydney breakfast radio got a shake up this morning, with an all-female show launching in a spot usually reserved for “bad boy” shock jocks and their female sidekicks.
Sami Lukis joined co-host Yumi Stynes to launch the first episode of their new radio show on Mix FM, replacing Tim Rosso in the peak ratings spot and marking the first all-women breakfast radio show in Sydney.
The decision by Mix FM to create an all-female show was made to give the network a “point of difference” in targeting the 25-44 year old female demographic. Melbourne’s Mix 101.1 introduced the first ever all-female breakfast team last year when Chrissie Swan and Jane Hall took over its breakfast slot.
Both Lukis and Stynes are familiar voices on radio, with Lukis having previously been in the national drive time slot co-hosting the Ant & Sami Lukas show and Stynes having hosted the 3pm Pick Up for Mix FM last year.
The show is a comeback of sorts for Stynes, who was widely criticised last year for comments she made during her time on morning chat show The Circle. She was dumped by the network when the show was axed.
Stynes and Lukis have both said they are excited to “bring a fresh perspective to the kinds of things that we ourselves – and our audience – go through every day”.
That fresh perspective this morning included an interview with a Sydney waitress who claims to have slept with a member of pop group One Direction and conversations about Sydney’s torrential weather.
They have inherited an audience share of just 3.5% , well behind mixed teams including the highly controversial Kyle & Jackie O Show, and Jonesy and Amanda.
