Why Australians are standing with Gillian Triggs

Australians have taken to social media to defend the president of the Human Rights Commission Gillian Triggs

Yesterday, the estimates committee heard that Attorney General George Brandis offered Triggs another legal role in government, in return for her resignation from the Human Rights Commission.

It also heard harsh attacks flung at Triggs from various Liberal senators, as well as the AG himself. During question time, the Prime Minister added his own criticisms to the conversation.

The hashtag #IStandWithGillianTriggs began yesterday afternoon with hundreds of people sharing their own reasons for supporting Gillian Triggs.

The public want an explanation for the concerted campaign against Triggs.

Australians are also using the hashtag to demand the AG’s resignation instead of Triggs’, as many are suggesting his attempt to convince the president to resign by offering her another job constitutes a breach of Australian law.

Here are a few of our favourite tweets.

And finally, perhaps the most succinct of all:

Why do you think we need to stand with Gillian Triggs? We’d love to hear from you.
