Days into her third term as Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore has lamented the treatment of high-profile women in the media, but says the problem's even worse in parliament.
Speaking at the official launch of Women's Agenda Thursday Morning, the Lord Mayor said the "culture" around how women are spoken about in the media and in parliament has turned "dark".
"I've been in parliament 24 years and I've never seen anything like it," she said.
Moore, preparing to leave the NSW Parliament following legislation introduced by Premier Barry O'Farrell that restricts councillors from serving as state MPs, also noted the very small amount of women in the O'Farrell Government.
"So you can imagine what that's like," she said.
However, following Alan Jones' recent on-air comments that women (including herself) were "destroying the joint", Moore said she's been heartened by the unification of women rejecting such behaviour. "There has been a wonderful reaction from women," she said.
She declared the official launch of Women's Agenda was an "exciting day for women", and urged for the conversation to continue regarding access to childcare, flexible work and equal pay.
She also talked up her own career ambitions: "When I started my career people were saying, 'you'll never do that!" Since then, she said, the comments have change: "[They say] 'if only we'd given her the grass for the park, then she would have gone away!"
