The 30 most family-friendly cities in Australia

Melbourne’s out-classed Sydney for yet another “best city” prize, but both cities couldn’t match the likes of Launceston and Canberra in the list of most family-friendly cities in Australia.

In fact, Sydney was well down on the list, coming in at No. 23, just ahead of Brisbane at 24. Melbourne took out the 14th spot.
According to the inaugural Suncorp Bank Family Friendly City Report, which ranks cities for their “family friendliness” — based on 10 indicators including unemployment, income, connectivity, number of GPs, general health, crime, education, child care, housing and community — Launceston beats all others as the best place to raise a family.

It’s followed by Canberra, Toowoomba, Albury/Wadonga, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.

When it comes to child care, Canberra boasts the largest number of child care spots per infant (based on the population of 0 to 4 year-old), followed by Wollongong and Burnie in Tasmania. The most crowded child care centres were found in the Gold Coast, Ballarat and LaTrobe. Melbourne was 16th on the child care index and Sydney 24.

Queensland was found to be the most family friendly state, carrying six cities within the top 20 .

Unsurprisingly, affordable housing held Sydney back in the overall ranking as a family-friendly city, as did a lack of child care places and GPs.

If you’re looking to pack the bags for Launceston, an average house will set you back around $335,000 according to Women’s Agenda sister site Property Observer, while a unit can be picked up for around $305,000.
