Stop the blokes: Charlie King’s message for Tony Abbott

ABC Sports broadcaster and anti domestic-violence campaigner Charlie King is calling on all Australians to demand the government to respond appropriately to family violence.

“I want government to commit to it. I want to call on all Australians to say to the government – don’t walk away from this responsibility,” Charlie King told Eleanor Hall on ABC’s AM World Today earlier.

He described the fact that 36 women have lost their lives in Australia since New Year’s Eve as “astonishing and unacceptable” and says the Budget does not adequately meet the challenge.

“The Prime Minister needs to get on the front foot and say he’s stopped the boats and now he’s going to stop the blokes. We need to do something to reduce the levels of violence in Australia,” King said. “If we don’t tackle this problem now we’ll see more and more violence in homes and on the streets. The government has a responsibility to play in this– they must commit the right amount of funding.”
