International Women’s Day: Our pick of this year’s events

Every year on the 8th March, millions of people celebrate International Women’s Day all over the world. From street parades in Liberia to an official public holiday full of gift giving in Russia, the celebrations vary but it’s definitely a day you’ll want to be part of.

There are lots of excellent events planned in Australia for the week around International Women’s Day. Here are some of our picks for the busy period.

March 5 

Melbourne 12.30 to 2pm Celebrate International Women’s Day with a fundraising lunch hosted by Opportunity International Australia. 

Hear Dr Medha Samant, leader of one of groups programs in India, as she shares the extraordinary stories of the women she has seen transform their family’s lives with small loans. More info here

March 6

CANBERRA 11:30 to 1:00pm: National Press Club of Australia: The Gender Agenda discussion
A lively discussion of gender issues with Tanya Plibersek, Julie Bishop and Julie McKay moderated by Virginia Haussegger. More info here.

ADELAIDE 6:30pm to 9:00pm: IWD Evening: In conversation with Justice Catherine Davani
Davani was the first women appointed to the Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea and she will be speaking about ending violence against women and her work in the Papua New Guinea legal system At the Allan Scott Auditorium, UniSA. More info here.

March 7

MELBOURNE 7:00 to 9:00: Celebrating Women in Conservation Debate
Celebrate the role of women in conservation and bush care at this business breakfast at the RACV club in Melbourne. Join Sam Mostyn, Alana Johnson and Rosemary Bissett as they discuss some of the key challenges and opportunities for women and the environment. More info here

7.30pm to 10:00pm: International Women’s Development Agency

Celebrate International Women’s Day with a benefit concert at Melburne’s recital centre. Hear from IWDA’s Patron Governor-General Quentin Bryce and featuring an acclaimed line-up of musicians, including Deborah Conway and Clare Bowditch, who support IWDA’s efforts to ensure the rights, equality and empowerment of women across Asia and the Pacific. HOBART 1:00pm to 2:00pm: Inaugural IWD Tasmania Debate
Some of Tasmania’s leading women are coming together to debate one of the big questions of IWD: “Are men and women equal in Australian society?” in this free debate in the Long Room at Parliament House in Hobart. The panel includes radio journalist Jayne Turner, Tasmanian anti-discrimination commissioner Robin Banks, ABC journalist Jane Longhurst, Liberal MP Elise Archer, Greens MP Cassie O’Connor, and Labor MP Michelle O’Byrne. SYDNEY 12:00pm to 3:00pm: NAB and Women’s Agenda Leadership Awards
This is our very own event, so we can recommend it with complete confidence! Come and celebrate Australia’s emerging and leading business and NGO superstars. With speeches by a range of inspiring women including the Honourable Nicola Roxon MP, tickets are disappearing fast but we’d love to see you there. More info here

BRISBANE 12:00pm to 2:00pm: AIM International Women’s Day
Network with other corporate women and listen to six accomplished business women (to be revealed on the day) discuss if and why “corporate women need to mind the gap” at the Australian Institute of Management’s Brisbane event. More info here

March 8

PERTH 7:00am to 9:00am: UN Women International Women’s Day Breakfast 
A wonderful opportunity to network and connect with inspiring women over breakfast, with proceeds going to United Nations programs for women dealing living in and recovering from domestic violence. More info here

ADELAIDE 7:00am to 9:00am: UN Women International Women’s Day Breakfast
Another excellent opportunity for networking and celebrating with UN Women, with funds going to the campaign to support those suffering and recovering from domestic violence in Papua New Guinea. More info here.

CANBERRA 12:00pm to 2:00pm: UN Women International Women’s Day Breakfast
A fundraiser lunch for programs supporting those suffering from domestic abuse in Papua New Guinea, run by UN Women Australia, held at the National Convention Centre. More info here. You can book tickets individually or in tables of ten. More info here.

Albury Wodonga: 12:00pm to 2:00pm Albury Wodonga  Women In Chamber

Join the very first Women In Chamber event celebrating women on International Women’s Day on the Border. MC’d by Sandra Moon from 1494/2AY Featuring two local women who will speak of their journey to Australia, entertainment by Valenga at The Cube Wodonga. More info here.

MELBOURNE 2:30pm to 6:00pm: Unconscious bias – recognising and overcoming the barriers that women face
The National Association of Women in Construction, Australian Institute of Project Management and Engineers Australia are hosting what is sure to be a fascinating event with Candy Tymson, an internationally renowned coach of recognising and tackling the challenges of unconscious bias. SYDNEY 6:00 to 7:30: Women’s Work Poetry Collection at the NSW State Library
Celebrate the role of women in literature at this launch of a collection of poetry by female poets from all over the world. The event will include talks and readings. More info here.

March 9
DARWIN 9:00am to 12:30pm: IWD Walk and Community Tea
Join with hundreds of other women for a walk through the Darwin CBD, and a community tea with speakers, entertainment and stalls at the Nitmiluk Lounge at Parliament House. Click here for more information. More info here.

SYDNEY 11:30am to 2:00pm: Parramatta Rose Garden Picnic
They’re expecting almost 500 women to attend this event in the Rumsey Rose Garden in Parramatta Park, so if you’re anywhere near Western Sydney, make sure it’s part of your weekend plans.
