Three ways to soothe a skin irritation

Whether you suffer from sensitive skin or not, there’s always room for a skin soothing product in your beauty bag. Summer sun, drying air-con, windy days, or even a small bout of the flu or a cold can leave your skin dry, itchy and irritated. Here are 3 of the best to avoid skin irritation issues in a flash…

For inflamed, red or sunburnt skin: the Indio SOS Gel/Mask

When the emergency alarm starts to ring and our skin flares up in response, look to this soothing gel. Enhanced with sodium hyaluronate and Vitamin B5 for intensive hydration, it not only has a soothing feeling, it also reduces redness from disturbed skin. It also contains Aloe Leaf Juice, Mallow, Green Tea, Calendula and honeysuckle flower which will come to your rescue if you happen to get a little burnt this summer… tsk tsk! SPF it up ladies – even if you are heading into the office for the day. Chances are, your skin will be exposed to UVs on the commute, or in your lunch break. And those are chances of sunburn and damage, you just don’t want to take!

For skin that feels tight and dry, especially after cleansing: Neal’s Yard Rehydrating Rose Toner

If your skin always feels dry and tight after cleansing, it’s probably time to think about switching cleansers. (Tip: foaming cleansers are more likely to strip skin and leave this feeling behind post-wash). However, sometimes your normal cleanser can leave skin feeling this way – even if it’s a milk or balm cleanser. Rather than go in with your exfoliating toner afterwards (which I usually LOVE!) take a step back and reach for something a bit more soothing on the skin. Otherwise, your oil production might go into overdrive to compensate… not what we want! At least 4 times a week, I like to tone with a soothing formulation, to give skin a little calming tlc, especially when that tight feeling has crept up on my complexion. This Neal’s Yard toner is perfect. It nourishes and soothes skin, prepping it for moisturisation. Organic plant oils and extracts – like the rose water –  also help to enhance your skin’s natural glow.

For skin that’s looking for anti-aging, that won’t irritate: The Dr. Lewinn’s Line Smoothing Complex S8 Hydrating Day Cream

A lot of anti-aging products focus on AHAs, retinols and glycolic acids (like the aforementioned) exfoliating toners/ chemical exfoliants and peels. While these are fantastic at skin rejuvenation and turn over, they can be very harsh when not used in moderation, especially on sensitive skin. (Tip: build up your use, by starting one night a week, and moving onto 3 nights per week etc.) But if you have skin prone to redness and sensitivity, best to skip them and look for a soothing anti-aging cream instead. Formulated with Hydro-Boost Micropatch, Snap-8 (Acetyl Glutamyl Heptapeptide-1 – a well-known anti-aging ingredients) and Caviar Extract, this cream is super nourishing and hydrating at the same time.
