The principles of light foundation

Applying a light foundation to great success can be a tricky trade to master. Not enough, and any blemishes, pigmentation and dark circles can break through. Too much, and flashbacks to the teenage years of caked on cosmetics can become your reality.

And yet light, well-applied foundation is the building block to everyday beauty! So it’s lucky that a couple of products can make it a whole lot easier…

BB cream
A bb cream is like a tinted moisturiser with an added extra – a lot of extras to be precise. BB creams combine a moisturiser, sun protectant and colour in one. They also act as a primer – smoothing the skins surface to reduce the appearance of pores – and create a flawless yet understated look.

To apply, swipe on with your fingertips, focusing on the areas that require the most coverage. You can also add a little primer, or moisturizer to a dollop of bb cream before applying, to make it even more sheer and blendable. I like the Erborian BB crème in the Light Hypoallergenic formula. It adapts to the skin’s natural tone, giving the perfect coverage, plus it contains Chinese camellia, Huang Qin and Japanese knotweed – all ingredients that help to calm the skin, as well as visibly reduce signs of ageing.

Mineral foundation
A mineral foundation is another option for a light coverage, perfect for daywear and ideal for work. Mineral foundations are powder formulations that are particularly kind to skin, ideal for those with acne, or sensitive skin. Due to their mattifying properties, mineral foundations are also perfect for those with oily skin, helping to avoid dreaded sheen.

To apply a mineral foundation, you’ll need a buffing brush – otherwise known as a kabuki brush. Get your brush and swirl it through the powder, tap the excess off and then buff into your skin with small and fast circular motions. You’ll find the powder sinking in fast, whilst giving an even finish. Keen to try? Look out for the Inika Mineral Foundation with SPF15. Long lasting and super gentle, this foundation is light enough for everyday use, whilst giving great coverage.
