Four ways to bring a little glow to your skin

With winter almost upon us, skin can suffer from feeling and looking a little bland and dull. Especially as more of us will be spending more of our time indoors, often in the heated and recycled office air. And especially when artificial lighting does so little to flatter skin tones!

This is why winter is one of the best times to learn how to apply illuminator correctly – it will make the world of difference to your complexion. Here is how to illuminate successfully and the products you’ll need in your beauty arsenal.

First, it is important to get your regular base just right. Apply your regular foundation and then conceal any areas of redness, blemishes or dark circles under the eyes with a creamy concealer like the Savoir Faire Concealer and Finishing Powder.

Next, you can try a powder illuminator to set your foundation in place. Just like a regular translucent powder, an illuminating one will simply add that extra glow to your skin. Try the Inika Mineral Illuminisor, which is extra light and not at all ‘glittery’. Swipe over your t-zone, but avoid getting too close to the upper cheek bones and eyes – illuminating powders can settle into any fine lines there, and highlight them. Not the result you want.

Once you’ve got your base sorted, it’s time to work on targeting specific areas to highlight and brighten your look. Before you reach for a liquid illuminator, look for a bronzing product first; always add your creamy/liquid illuminator at the very end! Lightly apply bronzer in small swipes just under your cheekbones, sweeping the bronzing brush upwards and outward towards your temples. Bronzer should be used to define and add ‘shadow’ or depth, so you want to place this a couple of centimetres below your illuminator. Try the MeMeMe Shimmer Stack, which is lovely and light and can be gradually built up to achieve your desired depth.

Finally, it’s time to really illuminate! Get your hands on a liquid or creamy illuminator like the Bloom Cream Blush Duo and start off small. If you want to apply blush, like the other section of this compact, add a touch to the apples of your cheeks first. Then, swipe on your illuminator with your fingertips, right on to the tops of your cheek bones, and up towards your outer eye area (again, without getting too close to your peepers!). You can also add this to the other high plains of your face – areas the light will catch – like the bridge of your nose, your brow bones (right below your eyebrows) and your cupid’s bow (in the middle of your top lip).

Tad daa! A light and luminous illuminated look to give your skin back a little of its former glow! – Lauren
