What you need to know before committing to a career change

In yesterday’s My Agenda webinar with Megan Dalla-Camina we explored the vexed issue of knowing when to make a career change. Figuring out whether it’s time for a new role in the same company, a similar job in a different company or a completely new vocation, is not always a simple process.

It’s a dilemma Megan works through with coaching clients quite a bit. While contemplating a big change can seem daunting at first, not to mention quite tempting to ignore, spending some time evaluating where you are and where you want to be is a worthwhile exercise.

For those of you who missed the webinar, below is small taste of Megan’s top tips.

  • Assess. Decide whether you’re seeking an incremental change, for example a new role in the same company, or a transformational change, leaving a corporate role to start a business.
  • Start planning. Putting pen to paper and actively visualising the future will quickly help you determine whether you’re daydreaming or whether you’re truly committed to forging a new future.
  • Use your fear. It’s there to teach you things so delve into any fears you have and explore them. Are they simply perpetuating limiting beliefs (like thinking you’re not smart enough or good enough) or are they legitimate concerns?

But, over and above all of those things the most important thing to do is to connect with what you truly want to do. Making a change which isn’t aligned with your true purpose and passion is destined to let you down. If you know where your passion lies this can be easy but if you don’t Megan recommended a few questions that can help guide you. These were two of them:

  • What did you want to be when you were growing up?
  • If you had to spend a night sleeping in a bookshop which section would you gravitate towards?

The webinar is available on My Agenda. Join My Agenda today to access Megan’s advice on a range of different career issues, as well as content from our other leadership coaches and an opportunity to network with like-minded peers.
